Holst, Walford Davies and Vaughan Williams: Works for Violin and Piano
Rupert Marshall-Luck (vn); Matthew Rickard (pf.)
Following their previous two critically acclaimed recordings for EM Records, Rupert Marshall-Luck and Matthew Rickard present on disc a programme of works by three contemporaneous composers. The Sonata in E-flat major by Walford Davies is his first in this genre and, like the Sonata in A major (recorded on EMR CD001), has been edited by Marshall-Luck from the autograph manuscript sources held at the Royal College of Music. It is complemented by Vaughan Williams’s Violin Sonata, a wide-ranging, virtuosic work, juxtaposing explosive energy, other-worldly etherialism and warm-hearted lyricism; and the Five Pieces of Gustav Holst: songful, memorable gems from the beginning of their composer’s career, the set of which has never been recorded before.
