Edward Elgar: Salut d’Amour  for Violin and Piano, op. 12
with marked and unmarked violin part
23pp. (IX+10+4)
Edward Elgar’s Salut d’Amour  had a special significance for the composer. Caroline Alice Roberts had been taking piano lessons with Elgar since 1886; but their teacher-pupil relationship soon blossomed into love and they became engaged in 1888. Elgar composed Salut d’Amour  (initially with the German title Liebesgruß ) for his bride. They were married in 1889 and the work was published during the same year.
This well-loved, delightful miniature is published in Henle Urtext in versions made by Elgar himself: in its original form for violin and piano; in the version for solo piano; and, appearing in print for the first time, the version for cello and piano that Elgar made for his great friend Dr Charles Buck and his wife.
