GURNEY, SAINSBURY & ELGAR
Works for Violin & Piano
Rupert Marshall-Luck (vn) | Matthew Rickard (pf)
EAN 5 060263 500100
These two fine musicians have done an invaluable service in bringing to light several works by their British countrymen that have heretofore been shamefully neglected. Marshall-Luck’s and Rickard’s performances of this music are, in turn, thrilling and touching. They capture the moods of these pieces unerringly and to perfection.
JERRY DUBIN | FANFARE
[The] hushed, intense slow movement [of Gurney’s Violin Sonata is] beautifully played by Rupert Marshall-Luck, whose detailed notes in the booklet, complete with musical illustrations, are most helpful... It’s good to be reminded what a powerful piece [the Elgar Sonata] is, helped by the concentration of Marshall-Luck and Rickard... Lionel Sainsbury’s Soliloquy, a compact work lasting just over seven minutes, makes a valuable addition to the programme. It develops a main theme in double-stopping, with hints of folk melody in the lyrical sections and some brilliant passage-work in triplets. Marshall-Luck plainly enjoys the sympathetic writing...
EDWARD GREENFIELD | GRAMOPHONE
[Sainsbury’s Soliloquy] is given a searing performance by Rupert Marshall-Luck, who convinces one that its comparatively short span contains an utterance of compressed energy, ideally realised... He realises the changes of mood [in Elgar’s Violin Sonata] with great sensitivity and... is not afraid to be by turns rhapsodic and quizzical.
PIERS BURTON-PAGE | INTERNATIONAL RECORD REVIEW
The [Gurney] Sonata receives the best possible advocacy in this splendid and dedicated performance... Marshall-Luck and Rickard display both passion and poise in a deeply-felt reading.
JOHN QUINN | MUSICWEB INTERNATIONAL
EMRCD011 features the World Première recording of the passionate Sonata for Violin and Piano in E-flat by Ivor Gurney, a composer celebrated primarily for his song settings, yet who is revealed here as a skilled author of chamber music. This emotionally intense and compelling piece is complemented by the much-loved Violin Sonata by Edward Elgar, and Lionel Sainsbury’s virtuosic Soliloquy for solo violin. Recorded in the outstanding acoustic of Wyastone Concert Hall in Monmouthshire, EMRCD011 features two critically acclaimed artists: the violinist Rupert Marshall-Luck and the pianist Matthew Rickard.
