EAN 5 060263 500056

These two fine musicians have done an invaluable service in bringing to light several works by their British countrymen that have heretofore been shamefully neglected. Marshall-Luck’s and Rickard’s performances of this music are, in turn, thrilling and touching. They capture the moods of these pieces unerringly and to perfection.

JERRY DUBIN | FANFARE

There is no doubting Rupert Marshall-Luck’s commitment... He addresses the needs of each composer and each movement – he really hurtles through the stormier waters of the Vaughan Williams, for example – and has in Matthew Rickard an adept and sympathetic accompanist.

COLIN ANDERSON | INTERNATIONAL RECORD REVIEW

The lively profusion of ideas [in Vaughan Williams’s Violin Sonata in A minor] demands as fully committed performance as it receives here. Similarly fine advocacy is given to Walford Davies’s Sonata in E-flat.

DANIEL JAFFÉ | BBC MUSIC MAGAZINE

This high calibre partnership speaks of sanguine spontaneity and a natural warmth and affinity for the music.

MICHAEL COOKSON | MUSICWEB INTERNATIONAL

Following their previous two critically acclaimed recordings for EM Records, Rupert Marshall-Luck and Matthew Rickard present on disc a programme of works by three contemporaneous composers. The Sonata in E-flat major by Walford Davies is his first in this genre and, like the Sonata in A major (recorded on EMR CD001), has been edited by Marshall-Luck from the autograph manuscript sources held at the Royal College of Music. It is complemented by Vaughan Williams’s Violin Sonata, a wide-ranging, virtuosic work, juxtaposing explosive energy, other-worldly etherialism and warm-hearted lyricism; and the Five Pieces of Gustav Holst: songful, memorable gems from the beginning of their composer’s career, the set of which has never been recorded before.
